When I just want to have some fun, I often do a portrait of a bird or animal. Here are a few of these…
Red-winged Blackbird
Acrylic on canvas, 9″x12″
Red-winged blackbirds have the striking red-yellow wing patch. Because they nest near water, they often came to my bird feeder when I lived near a pond.
Electric Fence
Graphite and colored pencil, 12″x18″
At Firnew Farm, where I meet weekly with a delightful artists’ group, there are lots of farm animals. The goats are particularly noteworthy. Here I wanted to create a little story. The sign on the (wooden!) fence rail says “warning, electric fence”. What is about to happen to the beautiful northern flicker? Maybe the goats are wondering!
Green Heron
Graphite and colored pencil, 12″x12″
Kayaking on the James River, when I lived near Howardsville on the James, I would often see these striking green herons. They are small for herons, but their neck can extend an enormous distance. This one has his neck only partly extended.
Portrait of Baxter
Charcoal and Conte crayon, 5″x7″
Pet portrait for a friend.
